I felt a lot of different emotions watching this film. The family had a lot of fun and celebrations but they were also a bit odd. The openness of the son sleeping with the help and actually she ends up having their child. There was also a lot of pain with the death of Fanny and Alexander's father. The Bishop was a terrible father figure to them. He eluded in the tilm that his father treated him like he was treating Alexander. I was very happy when they escaped and went back home. The film had a lot of color and ornate sets.
What an interesting movie, long but interesting. I didn't know that bishops could marry, let alone lock their step children in the attic. A very disturbing film at certain points.
One point that jumped out at me was when the Jewish family friend went to steal the children and the bishop suspected it, striking him and yelling "this hook-nosed Jewish bastard is trying to cheat me, he is trying to steal my children!" I thought Whoa, that type of language wouldn't be tolerated in this country today. Having a baby with your mistress/ housekeeper, no problem. Celebrating it, no problem. Burning people to death with witchcraft, no problem. But using an anti-semitic term, God forbid. I'm surprised the thought police in this country didn't have that removed even though it is a foreign film.
